"I Can't Hold Back My Tears"

December 21, 2015

Last week, I received the following chat message from Arthur Nhau: "As I was praying today something unusual happened, I started crying and can't hold back my tears." He continued by sharing, "In the few years of my spiritual journey I have longed to really hear God's voice and I think I heard his voice this morning."

This past year there has been a challenging situation with a particular person in the ministry which has weighed heavily on Arthur. He was praying about this situation when he heard God say, "He is your brother and you have not loved him enough." This brother has done and said some very hurtful things. Arthur felt like he had done all he could to minister to him and we were considering how to proceed. Through this experience in prayer, the Lord has directed Arthur to extend genuine forgiveness and to continue ministering to this brother. Our hope is that he will respond to the love of God shown through Arthur and that he will allow God's Spirit to transform him. Please pray with us in this situation and for so many others who have not experienced the love of God lived out before them in Chinhoyi.

I share this story with you to show how blessed Life to Life Africa is to have a leader like Arthur, who is earnestly seeking God as he leads the work in Chinhoyi. God has also raised up Jonathan Govero to assist the work as a true friend and advisor to Arthur as he serves as the board chairman for Life to Life Zimbabwe Trust. It was a true joy to meet with both of them on my last trip to evaluate the ministry for 2015 and then to prayerfully make plans for 2016. I am excited for what God is going to do through the courageous servant leadership of these dear brothers.

Arthur (L) and Jonathan (R)

Below you will find Arthur's 2015 year-in-review. Your support of Life to Life Africa sustains Arthur, Jonathan and the LTLA team in this kingdom work.

Grateful for your partnership!

LTLA 2015: YEAR IN REVIEW -- Arthur Nhau

Wow, we can’t believe that it’s been a year now since we left Nigeria and yet it feels like it was just yesterday. God has been gracious to us and also knowing there are people out there praying for us has really pulled us through. Coming back to an economy that is on its knees, I think we are learning more to worship than to whine.

We have been praying for long-lasting relationships and we are really humbled by the people God has introduced in our lives. We have witnessed women and men give their lives to Christ and not to us but to His name be the glory because of His love and faithfulness.

Pray with us that the young people in picture above, the glorious Father may give them
the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that they may know him better.

Pray as well with us that these men will still bear fruit in old age, and that they will stay fresh and green. (Psalm 92:14)

Pray that these young men will not suffer shipwreck with regard to the faith
and that they will encounter Christ every time they open scriptures.

As a team, pray that we will continue to be one, just as our Lord Jesus is with the Father.

Come , let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but will heal us" (Hosea 6:1). This has been our prayer for our nation of Zimbabwe, also pray for rains as it looks like we are heading for a drought season. As we continue to assist the people with food hand outs, pray that they will not "live on bread alone but on every word that comes form the mouth of God".

As a family, pray for health and that we will love as we lead.

Arthur, Donnell, Mildred, and Daisy Nhau

Above all, we give thanks in all circumstances and we pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel.

Humbled by His Great Love,

Arthur & Mildred

Bringing God's Kingdom to Chinhoyi

December 9, 2015

Just as Jesus taught us to ask that the Father’s kingdom, “come on earth as it is in heaven,” Life to Life Africa (LTLA) is asking God to bring His kingdom to Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe. James tells us that “God has chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom.” (James 2:5) The poverty generated by the current economic condition in Zimbabwe is driving people to the only hope that can be found and that is faith in Jesus Christ, the king of God’s kingdom.

Precious lives in a bad section of town, known for its spiritual darkness. Even the people there do not associate with her family because her father was in jail for murder. Knowing that “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4) emboldened Gogo Mildred to reach out to Precious. As a result, Precious has trusted Christ and is experiencing the transforming power of God’s love. She is now learning the assurance of our salvation in Christ as she reads the Bible every week with Gogo Mildred and Mildred Nhau, two LTLA team members. She has also placed her daughter Millicent (bottom left in photo) in the Life to Life Africa Critical Care Center- a feeding and educational program for preschoolers. There Millicent is learning about Jesus and is receiving two nutritious meals Monday through Friday. This is one of many families that Life to Life Africa has the privilege to serve as God brings His kingdom of light into the dark corners of the world.

Romalia is an example of many in Zimbabwe who have responded to the orphan crisis. As a widow, she is caring for her aging mother and for five children, two of her own (Richard, age 10, and Phillip, age 5) along with two nieces and a nephew. Her sister and brother-in-law died leaving Caroline (age 5) and Tanaka (age 2). Her brother left in search of work and his wife abandoned their daughter, Kelly (age 2), so Romalia is caring for her. Four of the children under her care participate in the LTLA Critical Care Center. Romalia is active in the LTLA widow ministry, Women of Hope, where women are encouraged and discipled in their relationship with Christ.

Romalia and Family

Life to Life Africa is sharing the love of Jesus with these two families along with another 100 families. We are assisting and training them in physical and spiritual dimensions of life. God is at work; we have seen many place their trust in Christ this year, including 9 men in the Men of Hope ministry. Our desire is to see the power of God’s kingdom transform the lives of orphans, widows and the poor in Chinhoyi.

Would you help us continue taking God’s kingdom to Chinhoyi? Our operational budget in Chinhoyi is $7,000 monthly and will need year end gifts to launch us into next year. Your special gift or monthly commitment will enable us to continue in 2016. You can contribute by sending your check payable to:

Showers of Blessing

November 25, 2015

At this thanksgiving season we are especially thanking the Lord for the rain that has fallen in Zimbabwe. Arthur passed along this photo last Thursday. What a joy to see the rain running off the roof in this photo. We thank the Lord!

Now the families we serve can plant their plot of corn to help feed their families. This past Monday the Life to Life Ambassador Team distributed the inputs for this year's crops to the families. They provided a bag for each family with compound D & top fertilizer, lime, corn & sorghum seed.

On my recent trip, I talked about the need to plant a drought-resistant crop with the LTLA Ambassador Team due to the failure of corn last year. We settled on sorghum which is indigenous to the region, unlike corn, and from which they can make their staple dish, "sudza." They prefer the taste of corn. But as we discussed it is better to have something than nothing, and sorghum actually has greater nutritional value. This year they will plant a few rows of sorghum alongside their corn to compare how it performs.

Our team is reminding the families of the training they received on good farming practices, especially providing a mulch cover to preserve moisture in the soil. We also are emphasizing that they must prepare, plant and care for their plots with joy because there is fulfillment in hard work. God has designed us to delight in the work of our hands and he will bless it. "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance." (Luke 8:15)

The Heat is On

October 16, 2015

This week parts of Zimbabwe experienced temperatures over 100 degrees and drought conditions continue as there as been very little rain in the last 18 months. Coupled with a cash shortage in the country due to a standstill in the economy and extreme power cuts where electricity is off all day, only on from 11pm - 5am, the people are experiencing very difficulty circumstances. Here is how it is affecting the work of Life to Life Africa:

Cooking with Firewood

The average Zimbabweans prepare their meals outside their homes over a fire. This is even more prevalent now with the extreme power cuts that are caused by lack of money to maintain power generation in the country. The LTLA Critical Care Center prepares two meals per day Monday-Friday for 30 orphans using firewood, as it is the most reliable and cost effective method. Stella who directs this ministry cooks these meals but has been ill since August with respiratory issues caused from inhaling the smoke.

Her illness has alerted me to the danger that so many are facing in Zimbabwe with constantly breathing smoke as they cook. Inhaling smoke while cooking can be equivalent to smoking 4 packs of cigarettes in a day. With this awareness and the desire to minimize deforestation, which is a big problem in Zimbabwe, we are looking to build a rocket stove for the Critical Care Center. Rocket stoves (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_stove) efficiently burn wood or other biomass which will minimize our firewood expense and help alleviate deforestation. It will also eliminate most of the smoke, promoting better health for Stella and others who help cook meals for the orphans. Shelton, a recent engineering graduate, from Chinhoyi University of Technology will spearhead this project with an eye on manufacturing these stoves for the families we serve and the community of Chinhoyi.

No Corn Harvest

Last May, 90 families we serve harvested next to nothing from their corn plots that yielded 4 months of grain the previous year. In response we have continued distributing food to these families where last year we stopped for 4 months. There was very little rain during this past growing season, November-May. Most were also not able to have a mulch cover on their plots to preserve some moisture in the soil due to the practice of burning to clear land and to hunt for mice. The families are trained not to burn but their neighbors do, which leads to the burning of their plots. As they prepare to plant their plots next month, we will need to extend the farming training to their neighbors and take measures in helping store mulch for their plots. Introducing drought tolerant crops, like millet and sorghum, is another option that we hope to explore.

Prayer Needed

As these families in Zimbabwe face the effects of hot weather, a drought, an economic standstill and no electricity, please pray for sustaining grace and relief from the Lord. Pray that the Lord leads us in ways to effectively help them and that people will turn to Christ who is the only source of true hope. Also pray for the 21 students who have expressed interest in attending the Navigators Student Conference, Oct 16-18. May their lives be transformed by an ever deepening relationship with Christ.
I travel to Zimbabwe Oct 18 - Nov 6, so will welcome your prayers as my focus will be planning for 2016 with Arhur Nhau, LTLA Director in Chinhoyi.

Mike Sulc

New Semester with New Opportunities & Challenges

September 30, 2015

Just like in the US during September, new university semesters begin in Zimbabwe. Our ministry in Chinhoyi not only impacts orphans, widows and the poor but it also impacts students at the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT). We see it as a strategic opportunity to reach future leaders in Zimbabwe among the 3,000 students who come from various parts of the country to study at this university.

Arhur Nhau, the LTLA director in Chinhoyi, leads the LTLA ministry team in our evangelism and discipling efforts with the students. They have been active this past month following up with returning students and meeting new students. Here is Arthur, sharing about two first year students that have become active in the ministry:

"Isheanesu, is a first year student who is a recruiter. He is always looking for friends to invite to our Bible studies. We pray that the vision of multiplying labourers will be clear and that he may continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

Isheanesu

"Zviko, is a first year student who really loves the Lord. I am really encouraged by his learner’s attitude as he is always asking questions and he doesn’t miss our discipleship appointments. He lives off campus and recently he lost his phone and laptop to thieves. Please pray that this incident will not discourage him but instead draw him even closer to the Lord."

Zviko, in red T-shirt

The photo below shows Arthur leading a Bible study with students at the LTLA Community Center which is located next door to the university. This gives us a great opportunity for impacting the campus. In the near future, instead of meeting outdoors this group will meet in the Life Discipleship Center that is being constructed in the area behind where the students are seated in this photo. Join us in praying that laborers for God's kingdom will be developed through the ministry to college students in Chinhoyi.

Do pray for our construction efforts of the Life Discipleship Center. Sever power outages have really slowed the progress of fabricating and erecting the steel structure. It is typical these days for the power to only be turned on from midnight to 6am, as the country does not have the capability of supplying enough electrical power to meet the daytime demands. The economic situation continues to deteriorate. In the photo below you will see the men working on one of the roof purlines. The footers are ready to be poured with concrete to support the steel columns, roof and walls. Please pray that sufficient electrical power would be supplied to complete the fabricating and erecting of the steel structure. Pray also that the government will make the needed policy changes to bring the country out of the deep poverty they are facing.

"That We May Be Mutually Encouraged"

September 1, 2015

The Apostle Paul in Romans 1:11-12 said, "I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong - that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith." Mutual encouragement is what happened in Chinhoyi between July 18-28, when the Hopevale Church mission team served in the work of Life to Life Africa. Not only did the team help break ground on the new Life Discipleship Center building, they also forged eternal friendships with brothers and sisters in Christ down deep in Africa.

It was a true joy to co-labor with this team! Thank you Hopevale Church for funding the Life Discipleship Center and for sending this pioneering team! Myself and the LTLA team look forward to future mission trips by Hopevale Church and others whom the Lord will lead to experience mutual encouragement in Christ- imparting spiritual gifts to one another. Below are some photos and video clips showing the impact of this mission trip.

As a 1st grade teacher, Andrea provided much needed training for our CCC staff. God also ministered through her as she shared about her relationship with Christ to individual ladies and to large gatherings of women.

Denny led the Hopevale team well even though it was his first mission trip. We are grateful for his influence in making this trip possible. Bob in his quiet way provided deep spiritual insight in his interactions with people along with demonstrating the value of hard work.

Extreme Poverty Overflowing into Generosity, and Another Adventure Begins

July 17, 2015

"Mike, it is a blessing to have you and your friends worshiping with us today," was the welcome that Tyler, Rod, Harold, and I received from Pastor Philip while attending the worship service at Tabernacle of David in Chinhoyi during our trip in May. What transpired next continues to blow me away. "Mike, God is directing us to give our entire offering today to your ministry," he informs us, stunning me as I shed tears of disbelief and joy, holding a bag full of money.

He said God had been laying 2 Corinthians 8:2 on his heart in the midst of the current economic situation in Zimbabwe. It is probably the lowest point that the country has been in, with the closing of so many companies this year due to the scarcity of cash and lack of investment into the country. This has been brought on by new government policies. Through these very trying times, we are witnessing God develop deep faith in Himself among His people in Zimbabwe. What a blessing for us to experience what Paul spoke of in 2 Corinthian 8:2, "In a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity."

Rod, Tyler, and Mike (back row, L-R), Pastor Philip and wife Hanilee, and Harold (front row, L-R)

This update is long overdue. Thank you for your prayers for the men who joined me on my last trip! Thomas, Life to Life staff from Florida, and Tyler, an ISU student, invested a lot of time in ministering to the young people in Chinhoyi, which infused the team with enthusiasm.

Thomas (back, middle) and Tyler (kneeling at right) with the LTLA Ministry Team at Chinhoyi University of Techonology

Rod and Harold, from Hopevale Church in Michigan, worked tirelessly to prepare the triplex building at the Community Center so we can house more young people for ministry training. The electrician, Mr. Phiri, whom Rod worked with, joined us for morning devotions. He said, "I have heard things that I have never heard before." He wants to continue reading the Bible with the men in Chinhoyi.

While there, 3 more men from the Men of Hope group entered into a relationship with Christ! Further evidence of what God is doing through severe affliction in Zimbabwe. Do pray for these men to be established in their new faith, and that their joy in Christ will draw others into life that is everlasting.

The triplex building that Rod and Harold worked on so diligently can also house visiting groups, which will happen July 18 - 28 when a group of 7 from Hopevale church comes to serve. These 2 women and 5 men will help break ground on the new Life Discipleship Center, along with engaging in ministry activities with the LTLA team. I will also be traveling to Chinhoyi with the group from Hopevale, and will remain through August 7 to work with the LTLA team there. Pray for safety, productivity, rich fellowship, and learning for all involved as we experience God working in and through us.

Adventurers Welcome! LTLA Prayer Bulletin

May 21, 2015

On May 21, three adventurers will join me in traveling to Zimbabwe. I am excited to have Tyler Marshall, an ISU student, along with Harold Dost & Rod Kwaiser from Hopevale Church joining me. I know they will be a blessing to have in serving the ministry in Chinhoyi and know that they will be blessed by the experience.

Tyler will be in Zimbabwe for 11 weeks as he completes a 6 week internship requirement for his major and volunteers with LTLA for 5 weeks. His internship will be with Foundations for Farming, the organization which provided training for the corn plot project we are conducting with the families we serve. Harold and Rod will be assisting in completion of plumbing work at our triplex building along with helping break ground for the new Life Discipleship Center.

Thomas Gilbert, the Life to Life Ministry Campus Director at Univ of Central Florida, will be joining us in Chinhoyi as well. He and I will then travel to Uganda on June 6, where we will visit Matt & Laura Bubalo, Life to Life Ministry missionaries. They recently settled in Mbale and are serving with Jenga, a Christian community development organization. We want to experience what God is doing there and encourage them in their service for our Lord.

Thank you for your prayers for Tyler, Harold, Rod, Thomas and myself, fellow adventurers in God's kingdom work.

In Arthur's Words

May 20, 2015

We are passing along to you a ministry update provided by Arthur Nhau, director of Life to Life Africa-Chinhoyi:

Greetings, as I look back I can’t believe it’s been almost six months since we left Minna, Nigeria. I have been greatly encouraged by the other trainees who were together with us in Nigeria as they share what they are trusting God for and now as we try by God’s grace to put into practice what we learned on how to do and think ministry.

One of my major highlights so far in coming coming back home knowing that Paul (Uncle Ron Shimkus) is gone and that I left Barnabas (Uncle Musa Yashim) back in Minna. But I have been encouraged by Exodus 4:12, when God told Moses “ Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” One promise that has kept me going is Genesis 12:1-3 and I’m beginning to see it unfold with relationships that God has given me and continues to give me.

One of the encouragements so far has been Campus and the joy of seeing the excitement of the LTLA team when they make new contacts and to see their disappointment when they struggle to follow up student. We continue to learn together that without God, it is impossible to do evangelism and that indeed “no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him."

Shelton finished college last year and has joined our LTLA team. He has really pushed me as he is zealous and wants to learn. I am really encouraged as we learn together. I am praying that he will continue to live in Christ, rooted and built up in Him.

Arthur (L) and Shelton (R) on campus at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT)

Lunga, who I am also discipling, is leading a group of elderly men called the “Men of Hope.” This year six men have given their lives to Christ. Please pray that Lunga and these men will continue to delight in the Lord.

On Campus, we started a bible study group this semester. A first year student, Ericsson, seems really interested in knowing the Lord. Pray that he continues to believe the scriptures.

As a family, we have settled well. We are grateful to the daily bread that the Lord continues to provide for us. My wife, Mildred, is really enjoying doing ministry with high school and college girls and she is now teaching our children to memorize scripture. I am really grateful on how we are complementing each other as a couple.

Prayer Needs, and Exciting News in Zimbabwe

April 15, 2015

In the days that followed the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his ascension to heaven, the disciples "joined together constantly in prayer." (Acts 1:14) During one of these prayer gatherings God filled them with the Holy Spirit, and the result is that you and I today have heard the great news of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.

God continues to work today through the lives of people who pray to Him and are filled with His Spirit. Would you pray and ask the Lord to fill the Life to Life Africa team in Chinhoyi with His Spirit so that His kingdom would grow there, dispelling the hopelessness of so many?

Please pray for the 90 families that planted plots of corn this year, that they place their hope in God even as it appears that their harvest will be meager. The country has experienced a drought and not all of the families were able to provide a mulch cover to preserve what little moisture there was in the soil. The grass and leftover corn plants from the year before tend to be burned, a common planting custom that is hard to stop there. When one does try to use grass clippings and old corn plants as mulch they may find that someone sets it on fire as they hunt for rodents to eat. Do pray for our team and the families we serve as they educate others in how to effectively grow crops.

Below you see Veronica Ndlovu, a widow, at her corn plot last month. She weeded her plot well but did not provide a mulch cover. You can see the condition of her 3 month old corn. Next month they will harvest what little corn they get. Last year we were able to stop our twice monthly food distribution to these families for 4 months, as their corn harvests yielded a four-month supply. They will be doing well if they get a 2 month harvest this year.

Jesus said we would still face trials as his kingdom has not yet been fully realized, but he has provided his resurrection power to confront the challenges we face. May we follow the example of the first disciples to "constantly pray," worshiping our Lord and asking that His kingdom would come on earth as it is in heaven.

Exciting News: Jonathan Govero's Wedding

Jonathan Govero, the chairman of our board in Zimbabwe, got married to Shalom this past Saturday, April 11. Jonathan leads the Navigators collegiate work in the capital, Harare, and received his master's in development recently. Shalom currently works in the development arena. Their love for the Lord and people along with their interest in development efforts will continue benefiting the work of LTLA in the years ahead.

More Exciting News: A New Building Project in Chinhoyi

Hopevale Church in Saginaw, MI, has generously raised the funds that are needed to help build the Life Discipleship Center on our property in Chinhoyi! This new building will provide the space where we can teach young and old about an abiding relationship with Christ and the space to train them with sustainable skills for their livelihood. It will enable us to also expand our impact on the Chinhoyi Universty of Technology campus next door to our Community Center.
